Education to Experience:
The Benefits of Pursuing a PELS License

Pursuing licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Licensed Surveyor (LS) in the United States offers numerous benefits that can enhance your career. By becoming a licensed PE or LS, you unlock professional advantages such as increased credibility, better job opportunities, and higher earning potential.

Here is an overview of the necessary steps and qualifications needed to acquire your PE or LS license:

  1. Education: Start your journey by building a solid foundation through a bachelor’s degree in engineering or surveying from an accredited institution. This education equips you with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the field and tackle significant challenges.
  2. Examination: Validate your expertise by passing the relevant exams. For engineers, this includes the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams. Surveyors must pass the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) and Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exams. In Texas, you must pass the Texas Ethics Engineering examination as well.
  3. Work Experience: Develop your skills and gain invaluable hands-on experience by working under the supervision of a licensed PE or LS for 4-8 years, depending on your state’s requirements.
  4. Ethical Conduct: Demonstrate your commitment to ethical practices and gain the trust of clients and employers by passing a background check and maintaining good moral character.
  5. Continuing Education: Stay at the forefront of industry advancements by continuing education courses in ethics and professional practice, ensuring your knowledge and skills remain up-to-date.

Remember that licensing requirements vary by state, so research the specific criteria for your location to ensure you’re on the right path.

Becoming a licensed PE or LS promotes your professional standing and allows you to contribute meaningfully to the engineering and surveying communities.
